The Explanation :
One's stomach is filled with acid. Its purpose is to help digest the food you
eat. Believe it or not, this acid is as strong as battery acid. But, Your
stomach is built to handle it. Your esophagus, the tube that carries food from
your throat to your stomach, isn't.
So when acid backs up into your esophagus, it can cause the burning sensation
known as heartburn (The most common symptom of acid reflux disease (also known
as gastroespohageal reflux disease, or GERD)). Heartburn feels like a burning
pain in the center of the chest. It is caused by acid from the stomach backing
up into the esophagus..
Almost everyone has occasional heartburn. But if these symptoms occur two or
more days a week for at least three months, you may have acid reflux disease (GERD)Also
known as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). Describes the condition of
backflow of stomach acid into the esophagus which frequently happens when the
lower esophageal sphincter (LES) relaxes more often than it should and/or at
inappropriate times.. Acid reflux occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter -
the valve separating the esophagus and stomach-does not close properly, allowing
acid to back up into the esophagus. In short, acid refluxBackflow of stomach
acid into the esophagus. Acid reflux frequently happens when the lower
esophageal sphincter (LES) relaxes more often than it should and/or at
inappropriate times. This allows harsh stomach juices to back up into the
esophagus. disease is chronic heartburn.
BUT…
Acid reflux disease is a chronic condition and may lead to more serious medical
conditions. Acid reflux can even wear away or erode the lining of your
esophagus. This condition is called Erosive Esophagitis (EE)Erosion of the
lining of the esophagus from acid reflux disease. This occurs in some patients
with ARD when the esophagus is exposed to stomach acid over a period of time.
This condition is generally diagnosed by an endoscopy.. Only a doctor can tell
you if you have this damage.
RECOMMENDED DIET :
The following recommendations may be helpful in reducing symptoms:
* Eat small, frequent portions of food and snack if needed.
* Stop using tobacco in all forms. Nicotine weakens the lower esophageal muscle.
* Elevate the head of the bed six to eight inches to prevent reflux when
sleeping. Extra pillows, by themselves, are not very helpful.
* Avoid chewing gum and hard candy. They increase the amount of swallowed air
which, in turn, leads to belching and reflux.
* Do not lie down immediately after eating. Avoid late evening snacks.
* Avoid tight clothing and bending over after eating.
* Lose weight if overweight. Obesity leads to increased reflux.
THESE FOODS SHOULD BE AVOIDED :
* peppermint and spearmint
* chocolate
* fatty or fried foods
* whole milk
* oils
* creamed foods or soups
* most fast foods
THESE FOODS SHOULD BE AVOIDED OR ELIMINATED :
* caffeinated soft drinks
* citrus fruits and juices (grapefruit, orange, pineapple, tomato)
* coffee (regular and decaffeinated)
